What is a snake robot?
Tuesday, 31 May 2011 22:34
A snake robot is a robotic mechanism with a long and flexible body that can move like a biological snake. In a few years, such mechanisms will be used in search & rescue operations after earthquakes, in fire fighting operations, in pipe inspection tasks, and in subsea operations.

Kulko - A snake robot with tactile sensors
Tuesday, 31 May 2011 18:25
Kulko is an experimental platform for investigating snake robot locomotion in environments with obstacles. The joint modules of Kulko are covered by contact force sensors to allow the robot to sense its environment, and spherical shells that give the robot a smooth outer surface, thereby allowing slithering (gliding) motion in unstructured environments.

SnakeFighter - Robotic fire fighting
Tuesday, 31 May 2011 15:57
A few years ago, a research scientist at SINTEF had an idea. Why not enable a fire hose to move on its own? This way, the hose can crawl into a burning building and extinguish a fire on its own without putting human beings at risk. Shortly after, SINTEF decided to build this robot. The project, initiated in 2003, was named SnakeFighter.

SLICE - Snake Locomotion in Challenging Environments
Thursday, 27 January 2011 09:05
A four year project on snake robot locomotion in challenging environments started at NTNU Dept. of Engineering Cybernetics and SINTEF ICT Applied Cybernetics in January 2011. The project will target methods for snake robot obstacle-aided locomotion, which has been an active field of research for some time now at NTNU/SINTEF.
